Shivam began the session by having each of the students read their rebuttals in front of the class. Then, he offered constructive criticism on their writing and also gave them public speaking advice. Next, each student read a couple paragraphs from The Wall Street Journal newspaper. Shivam told the students to pretend that they were experts on what they were talking about, even though they had never seen the text before. This exercise helped improve the students’ confidence while speaking. After that, Shivam passed out an official debate scoring rubric. He reviewed the rubric with the students and let them choose a topic to debate. The students had 20 minutes to form their arguments using the guidelines of the rubric. Finally, the students had an organized, timed debate while Shivam scored them.
