For the majority of this week’s class, Shivam and the students played a fun debate game. Prior to the session, Shivam had prepared several flashcards. Written on each one of these cards was a debate topic and a stated position. A student would randomly select one of these cards and have to argue on behalf their stated position against Shivam. This was very difficult because the students had no previous knowledge about the topic on the card and they were not always in agreement with the stated position. Regardless, the students still had to develop their arguments spontaneously and refute Shivam’s rebuttals. The purpose of this exercise was to enhance the students’ argumentative skills, public speaking skills, and impromptu thinking skills. After the game, Shivam passed out the debate scoring sheet to all of the students and went over what was expected for next week's homework.
