Class began with the students reading their revised writings. Kevin and Shivam timed them and critiqued their work. Then, Kevin and Shivam informed the students that they would be showcasing their debate skills during the annual function and everyone considered some possible presentation ideas. After that, Kevin, Shivam, and the students discussed some current events and world issues. The students practiced forming opinions and expressing them in an organized fashion. Next, each student read a couple paragraphs from a magazine article. This time, the kids focused on the speed and tempo at which they spoke. While they were reading their arguments, many of the students were talking too fast so Kevin and Shivam made sure that they slowed down. The students felt that speaking so slowly was uncomfortable and awkward so Kevin and Shivam showed them a video of former U.S. President Bill Clinton giving a speech. They took note of his slow tempo, his articulation, and how he took pauses in between words. By the end of the session, the students had a clear understanding of what superior oratory skills are supposed to sound like.
